I found an article that helped me fix my spell checking at work. I'm posting it here so I can reference it later.

Go to start, and the click on run.
On the window that opens type regedit and click OK
This will open the Registry Editor, in here you want to:
    HKEY_CURRENT_USER/Software/Microsoft/Shared Tools/Proofing Tools/1.0

At this location you want to right click on the override folder and delete.
Click yes when the system ask you if you want to delete the key and all subkeys.

Open word and spell checker should work.
